Tennis Suffers Fourth Defeat of Season
Feb. 19, 2012
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.- The No. 66 ranked Marshall University tennis team succumbed to the No. 41 ranked Boilermakers of Purdue University on Saturday afternoon, condemning itself to a third-straight loss against nationally-ranked opposition.
Led by freshmen Lynda Xepoleas and Daniela Vidal, the Boilermakers swept the Thundering Herd 7-0 at the Schwartz Tennis Center to move its all-time record against Marshall to 2-0. Not even the Herd’s No. 51 ranked duo of Maria Voscekova and Dominika Zaprazna was able to withstand the Purdue onslaught, as the pair fell 8-6 to its Indianan opposition.
For Marshall, it was its second game in two days after defeating Wichita State 4-3 just one day earlier. The Boilermakers took advantage of that, and dropped the Herd to a 3-4 season record while boosting its own impressive mark to 6-1 for the year.
“Purdue played a great match today,” said Marshall head coach John Mercer, “and we need to learn how to rise to that level ourselves when playing against quality opposition.”
With the loss Marshall moves to 3-4 on the season and is 0-3 against opposition ranked in the ITA’s top-100. The Herd will next face Penn State this Friday at 5:00 p.m. in University Park, Pa.
