UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Marshall University women’s tennis team improved its record to a perfect 10-0 as the Herd won a hard-fought battle with No. 42 Boise State, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at the University of Penn State.
“We had a good match with Penn State last night,” head coach John Mercer said, “And that gave us momentum heading into today. Boise state is a top-flight team and it was great to see us toughen one out today.”
As it did on Friday night against the Nittany Lions, MU took two-of-three doubles matches from the Broncos, giving the Herd a 1-0 lead heading into singles action.
Second doubles saw the Herd tandem of Isabell Raich and Kara Kucin top Boise States team of Jasper/Pieztuch by a mark of 8-6. Thaddea Lock and Deanna Bailey, playing third doubles, squeaked by Edwards/Jochimsen in a tie break, 9-8 (7-5).
No. 23 Michaela Kissell/Dominika Zaprazna fell to the Bronoc’s nationally-ranked pairing of No. 33 Thongdach/Meagle, 8-6.
After suffering her first loss of the season, No. 42 Michaela Kissell bounced back in singles with authority as she crushed No. 27 Pichittra Thongdach in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
Singles three, four and five also recorded wins for the Herd. After dropping the first set 6-2, Isabell Raich battled for a three set victory over Bianca Jochimsen in third singles, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Catherine Kellner (6-1, 6-3) and Deanna Bailey (6-2, 6-4) had little trouble in fourth and fifth singles and each player remains unbeaten in singles through 10 matches this season.
“It was good to see Michaela bounce back against a very good player,” Mercer said, “But our girls have been showing that ability to come back and win after suffering a defeat all season. We are off to a great start. We have to focus in on each individual match and not get ahead of ourselves. But it is great to be 10-0. We will take as many wins over ranked opponents as we can.”
The victory over Boise State marks Marshall’s fourth win in five matches over a nationally-ranked opponent.
The Herd resumes play on the road next weekend as MU travels to Tennessee for a match with Middle Tennessee State University on Saturday, Feb. 27. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m.
