Herd Tennis Concludes Road Trip with Loss to North Texas
Anna Smith was leading her match when the overall match was called
DENTON, Texas — The Marshall women’s tennis team closed out its five-match road trip Sunday afternoon, dropping a 5-0 decision to Conference USA foe North Texas at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
“It was a tough match today,” head coach John Mercer said. “Give credit to North Texas. They played well to get the early advantage and were able to close us out having to only win two matches to get the win.”
Marshall dropped the doubles point to the Mean Green, as Brooke Lashway and Ana Marhuenda were defeated, 6-0, by Haruka Sasaki and Nidhi Surapaneni, while Stephanie Smith and Maddie Silver lost to Alexandra Heczey and Tamuna Kutubidze, 6-3. Anna Smith and Marija Bogicevic were trailing the North Texas pair of Maria Kononova and Minying Liang, 5-3, when the Mean Green clinched the point.
The Herd was forced to forfeit a singles match at No. 6 due to injury, giving North Texas another point. Bogicevic lost to Liang in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Stephanie Smith was defeated by Kononova, ranked 66th in the country, 6-2, 6-3, in the match clincher. Silver and Marhuenda each dropped the first sets of their matches, which were still in progress when North Texas clinched the win. Anna Smith had a 6-0, 3-4 lead over Surapaneni when the match was called.
“It was good to see Anna get off to a quick start today. We’ve been lacking that this season, so hopefully we can build on that and it’s contagious,” Mercer said.
The Herd returns home for three matches in a span of three days, beginning Friday afternoon with a 4 p.m. match against Cincinnati.
