HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-The Marshall tennis team evened its record at 5-5 Friday after defeating visiting UNC Greensboro 5-2 at the Huntington Tennis Club.
UNCG dropped to 3-4 on the season.
The Herd rebounded, after losing the doubles point, by winning five of its six singles matches. Dominika Zaprazna, Maria Voscekova, Dana Oppinger, Kara Kucin and Karlyn Timko all emerged victorious, with Voscekova outlasting UNCG's Dilara Yurtkuan in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 7-5) at No. 2 to clinch the win. Timko won her fourth straight match with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victory at No. 6. Oppinger at No. 3 (6-1, 6-1) and Kucin at No. 5 (6-1, 6-4) breezed to victories, as did Zaprazna at No. 1 (6-4, 6-1).
"We did a great job coming back," said Marshall head coach John Mercer. "We knew UNCG was going to be a tough team this year. I was impressed with our singles because we competed hard and showed a lot of mental fortitude."
UNCG captured the doubles point as Stephanie Falcon and Yurtkuan won 8-6 at No. 3, while Rios and Kayla Gammie triumphed at No. 2 (8-5). The Herd's lone victory came at No. 1 as Zaprazna and Voscekova won 8-4 at No. 1
Marshall will be back in action Saturday at 10 a.m. against Old Dominion (7-3).
