Herd Drops 5-2 Match to #50 SMU

LAS VEGAS, Nevada-Marshall’s Karlyn Timko won her 10th-straight singles match, but it was 50th-ranked SMU who came out on top Sunday in Las Vegas as the Mustangs notched a 5-2 victory.

Marshall dropped to 8-9 on the season.

Timko split the two sets at #6 singles (6-2, 4-6) before clinching the win 10-7 in the supertiebreaker. Maria Vosekova won her #3 singles match after she also split sets (6-3, 6-7) but also came up with a 10-7 win in her supertiebreaker.

Marshall’s Dominika Zaprazna fell 6-2, 6-1 at #1 and Dana Oppinger lost 6-3, 6-4 at #2. Kai Broomfield played at #4 and fell 6-2, 6-3, while Kara Kucin lost a close match (6-2, 2-6, 6-4) at #5.

Zaprazna and Kucin garnered a decisive 8-1 win at #1 doubles, but Voscekova and Broomfield lost 8-2 at #2 and Timko and Oppinger dropped a hard-fought 9-7 decision at #3 after nearly closing it out on three separate match points.

The Herd will host Pittsburgh on Friday at 2 p.m., while VCU visits Sunday for an 11 a.m. start.
