MEMPHIS, Tenn.- The No. 5 seeded Marshall University women's tennis team made quick-work of the UTEP Miners on Thursday morning, sweeping the No. 12 seed 5-0 to advance to tomorrow's Conference USA quarterfinal against host team and No. 4 seed Memphis.
The Thundering Herd jumped out to an early lead over UTEP by winning two of the three doubles matches to go up 1-0. Number two duo Kara Kucin and Ellie Ball swept the Miners' Dariya Abdrakhmanova and Anastasiya Sylenko 8-0 for the first Herd win, paving the way for number one tandem Dominika Zaprazna and Maria Voscekova to clinch the point for Marshall with an 8-5 victory over Martina Trierweiler and Rebeca Calvillo.
Kucin continued her dominance in singles play, winning in straight sets with a 6-1, 6-0 victory on court four that made it 2-0 for Marshall before senior Kristina Koprcina won 7-5, 6-4 to extend the lead to three. Zaprazna then wrapped the match up for the Herd, winning 6-4, 6-4 in the number one slot as Karli Timko also won in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 on court six. Sophomore Maria Voscekova and freshman Ellie Ball's matches went unfinished on courts two and three, respectively.
"I thought UTEP played well and made us step our game up as the match went along," said head coach John Mercer. "Thankfully we did that and were able to get out of the first round with a win. Now we have a tough one playing against Memphis at home tomorrow, but the girls are excited about it and pumped for what should be a fun match."
The victory pushes Marshall's spring record to 13-9 for the season and more importantly sees the Herd progress to the quarterfinals of this year's C-USA Championships. The host-team, Memphis, awaits the Herd in the upcoming round, with the match scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m. on Friday. The showdown will be Marshall's second-ever matchup with the Tigers after defeating them 4-0 in the quarterfinal stage of the C-USA Championships last season.
