HOUSTON, Tx.-The Marshall tennis team put up a valiant effort against 24th-ranked Tulsa but eventually fell to the second-seeded Golden Hurricane 4-0 Friday in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Tournament.
Tulsa improved to 18-5 overall, while the Herd dropped to 13-11.
The Herd nearly claimed the match's doubles point and led at several points of the competition. The No. 1 team of Dominika Zaprazna and Kara Kucin built a 5-1 lead over the 21st-ranked team of Isaura Enrique and Samantha Vickers but, in the end, dropped the contest 9-7. The No. 3 team of Karlyn Timko and Dana Oppinger had a nip-and-tuck match as well, but lost 9-7 in the tiebreaker. The No. 2 team of Ellie Ball and Maria Voscekova saw their match go unfinished with the score 8-7 Tulsa.
In singles, Zaprazna fell 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1, while Kucin lost 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 and Timko lost 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6. Oppinger was trailing 6-4, 5-1 at No. 2 when her match was called. Voscekova won the first set 7-5 and was leading 1-0 in the second at No. 3 and Ball ended up splitting her sets 6-3, 2-6 at No. 4.
Tulsa will now face third-seeded Memphis Saturday in the tourney's semifinals.
