ORLANDO – The No. 52 Marshall University tennis team was ousted in the semifinals of the Conference USA Tournament on Saturday afternoon as No. 33 SMU (21-4) defeated the Thundering Herd (18-6) by a score of 4-1 at the Lake Cane Tennis Courts.
For the first time this season, the doubles tandem of Michaela Kissell and Dominika Zaprazna were defeated as SMU’s pair of Marta Lesniak and Aleks Malyarchikova won by a score of 8-2. MU’s top duo finishes the season with an overall record of 19-1 and will try their luck in the NCAA Doubles Tournament.
SMU ended up securing the doubles point with a win on court two. Catherine Kellner and Maria Voscekova lost in second doubles by a mark of 8-5 to Heather Steinbauer and Edyta Cieplucha while Kara Kucin and Karli Timko left their match unfinished on court three.
In singles, Kucin provided the Herd with its sole win of the afternoon with a win coming on court six over Ashley Turpin, 6-1, 6-4. The Mustangs took wins on courts one, three and four. Zaprazna and Voscekova left their matches unfinished with the match decided in the favor of SMU.
The Herd is squarely on the bubble for an NCAA Team Tournament at-large berth and will await its fate when the committee reveals the 64-team bracket later next week. NCAA’s are slated for May 15-29, hosted by Stanford.
