Marshall Finds Doubles Success on Day One|

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The Marshall University women’s tennis team opened its fall season on Friday morning at the UVA Fall Invitational Tournament and found mixed results as two of its three doubles teams and just one of its seven singles players went unbeaten on day one.
Junior Karli Timko was the lone singles player to remain in contention for the Herd after she defeated Furman’s Kelly Sullivan (6-0, 3-6, 6-4) and ODU’s Nika Kumolovska (6-4, 6-3) to advance to the semifinal of the B Flight. She will play UNC Greensboro’s Dilara Yurtkuran at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday to see who will progress to Sunday’s final at noon. Dominika Zaprazna and Ellie Ball also won their opening singles matches, but fell in the subsequent quarterfinal rounds. Kara Kucin, Dana Oppinger, Maria Voscekova, and Kai Broomfield were all defeated in their opening matches and will play the remainder of the singles tournament on the consolation side of their brackets.
In doubles play, No. 1 pair Zaprazna and Voscekova defeated UVA’s Fuccillo and Peretz (8-6) to advance to an A Flight, quarterfinal showdown with VCU’s Terteac and Kvitashvili at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Oppinger and Timko found success in the B Flight, downing ODU’s Pires and Vukovic (8-0) to advance to the semifinal stage for a 9 a.m. Saturday showdown with South Carolina’s Alawi and Martin.
