CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- Junior Karli Timko and freshman Dana Oppinger played to a B Flight doubles championship on Sunday as the Marshall tennis team concluded its opening tournament of the fall at the UVA Fall Invitational.
The duo, competing as a team for the first time, put together a streak of two wins over the first two days of the event before dominating Wake Forest’s Forman and Zhang, 8-1 in Sunday’s final match.
Elsewhere, Timko, junior Maria Voscekova, and senior Dominika Zaprazna won their final day singles matches by default, while sophomore Ellie Ball took fifth place in the singles B Flight with a 6-3, 7-5 victory. Senior Kara Kucin was also victorious on Sunday, winning 6-1, 6-7, 10-8 over Wake Forest’s Zhang to take third place on the consolation side of the B Flight. Kai Broomfield finished second in that same bracket, losing to Winthrop’s Ekin Gunaysu 6-0, 7-6 in the consolation final.
“First of all I’m happy for Karli and Dana getting the win in their B Flight doubles championship. It was exciting to see them play well and I was glad they had success playing together,” said head coach John Mercer. “In general it was a typical first tournament of the year. We played well at times, and not so well at others. We were a little streaky, but that’s to be expected. It was good to get the first tournament under our belts and see what we need to get back and work on. We’ll get back to practice and keep moving forward.”
The Herd’s next fall event is scheduled for Oct. 1-9, as the team heads to Los Angeles, Calif., for the All-American Tournament. Final results and brackets from this weekend’s UVA Fall Invitational are available by clicking the link below.
