BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Marshall tennis team completed day two of the annual Hokie Fall Invitational on Saturday. Today featured two rounds of doubles and one more round of singles action. Tomorrow will be the final of both singles and doubles.
“We started terribly today and finished really well,” commented coach John Mercer. “It was the complete opposite of yesterday, but should we really expect anything different from such a young team?”
In Flight A action, sophomore Dana Oppinger advanced to the finals by defeating Raluca Mita of Virginia Tech (6-4, 6-2) while in Flight B, senior Karli Timko also will be in the finals after defeating Amanda Wickman of Pittsburgh (6-2, 6-4).
“Dana and Karli are in the finals which is great,” concluded Mercer. “Their effort today was fantastic.”
Junior Kai Broomfield advanced to the fifth place match in Flight B singles action by knocking off Alex Huie of James Madison (6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (3)) while freshman Rachael Morales will play in the consolation fifth place match after defeating Sitilia Rancheli of VCU (6-3, 6-3) on Saturday.
Freshman Anne Gulsrund advanced to the consolation fifth place of Flight C action by beating Laura Ramthun of Virginia Tech (6-1. 6-1).
