Oppinger and Timko Win Their Flights|
Sept. 29, 2013
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Marshall tennis team completed the annual Hokie Fall Invitational on Saturday. Today featured the final of both singles and doubles play.
In Flight A action, sophomore Dana Oppinger (Weingarten, Germany) defeated Isel Martinez-Marcos of Virginia Tech (6-3, 7-6 (6)) to be crowned the champion, while senior Karli Timko (Houston, Pa.) took home the Flight B single’s title after Audrey Ann Blakely of Pitt withdrew from the match.
“It was great having Dana win the A Flight and Karli win the B Flight, commented coach John Mercer. “They really stepped up their level of play as did everyone else as the weekend went along.”
Junior Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada) earned a fifth-place finish in Flight A singles action after defeating Belen Rivera of Liberty (1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10)) while freshman Rachael Morales (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) won the consolation fifth-place match in the Flight B singles bracket knocking off Rachel Nelson of James Madison (6-2, 7-6 (2)).
Freshman Anne Gulsrund (Stavenger, Norway) also won her consolation fifth-place match in the Flight C singles bracket by defeating Ogungbesan of Pitt (6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (5)).
“To go 17-3 in singles matches was very impressive for this group of five,” remarked Mercer. “Also, to win their last 10 singles matches says a lot about how hard they have worked with our strength and conditioning staff and with our on court running program. They all looked very strong at the end of the weekend.”
Marshall will return to action Oct. 18-22 in the Atlantic Regional Tournament in Charlottesville, Va.
