WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The Marshall University women’s tennis team has concluded day one of the 2011 Wake Forest Fall Invitational, and so far four of the six singles matches and five of the six doubles matches have gone Marshall’s way.

The Herd started the tournament at 9:00 a.m. Friday morning, with No. 4 seeded Dominika Zaprazna squaring off against Richmond’s Helen Cunningham in the A Flight. Zaprazna won the match in 6-3 and 7-6 sets, and has advanced to a quarterfinal showdown with CAM’s Karolina Chernaya that is set to take place at 10:00 a.m. Saturday.

In the B Flight, Marshall encountered its only two singles losses of the tournament so far, as Maria Voscekova fell to the University of Virginia’s No. 2 seed Molly O’Koniewski in three sets, and No. 4 seed Karli Timko was upset by Winthrop’s Andressa Garcia 6-1 and 6-0. Both ladies will now play 10:00 a.m. consolation matches on Saturday.

In the C Flight, Kristina Koprcina downed Radford’s Hanna Crawford in three sets to advance to an 11:30 a.m. matchup with East Tennessee State’s Karina Kedzo in Saturday’s quarterfinal. Meanwhile, Kara Kucin advanced to the same stage in the D Flight with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Davidson’s Nisha Crouser, and Ellie Ball followed suit in the E Flight when she downed Katherine Dicconson of Davidson 6-4, 6-1. Kucin and Ball will play their Saturday, quarterfinal matches at 12:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. respectively.

On the doubles side, Marshall found more success as the No. 4 seeded team of Zaprazna and Voscekova defeated a Radford pair 8-1 in the first round and a UNC-Wilmington team 8-4 in the quarterfinal. The duo is now set to face UVA’s Peretz and O’Koneiewski in the A Flight semifinal at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.

In the doubles B Flight, No. 1 seeded partners Kucin and Koprcina won the opener 9-8, but couldn’t find the energy to win the quarterfinal matchup as they were swept 8-0 by Louisville’s Harris and Velasquez. The pair will now play in a fifth place consolation semifinal against Radford’s Crawford and Napolitano at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.

And lastly, there was the C Flight, No. 2 seeded doubles team of Ball and Timko, who rode a first round bye to a quarterfinal victory over Davidson’s Dicconson and Wood. The Marshall pair won the match 8-3, and will now face RIC’s Kandinata and Sims at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
