@Herd_Tennis Ends ITA Regional Run

Anna Smith had the best performance this weekend for the Herd, reaching the round of 32 in the singles and doubles brackets.

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Marshall women's tennis team concluded play at the ITA Atlantic Regional Tuesday. The Herd was eliminated from championship contention Sunday.
No singles players or doubles teams were able to make it past the round of 32. At the 2016 ITA Atlantic Regional, the herd produced runner-up performances in both the singles and doubles brackets.
Anna Smith posted the best performance for the Herd in singles play. Smith was the only member of the Herd to win a singles match in the main draw, defeating Melissa Ifidhzen of VCU in straight sets in the round of 64, 6-3, 7-5. Smith fell in the round of 32 to Maryland's Ekaterina Tour, 7-5, 6-3. Maddie Silver and Stephanie Smith both lost in the round of 64 in straight sets and Brooke Lashway was eliminated in the qualifying draw.
Stephanie Smith and Brooke Lashway were the most successful doubles pairing for the Herd at the regional, defeating Pitt's Gabriela Rezende and Jovana Knezevic, 8-3, in the round of 64 before falling to top-ranked Meghan Kelley and Rosie Johansen of Virginia, 8-2 in the round of 32. Maddie Silver and Anna Smith earned a bye into the round of 32 as one of the 16 seeded doubles pairs, but fell to Duquesne's Kylie Isaacs and Julianne Herman, 8-4.
Virginia Tech's Natalie Novotna won the singles draw and the pairing of Virginia's Meghan Kelley and Rosie Johansen won the doubles draw. Novotna, Kelley and Johansen will represent the Atlantic region at the Oracle/ITA Fall National Championships in November.
