BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Karli Timko and Kai Broomfield of the Marshall University women’s tennis team both won their opening singles matches on Friday to progress to the second stage of the Qualifying Round at the ITA Atlantic Regional.
Timko bested UMBC’s Josefin Stange-Jonsson 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 to advance, while Broomfield outlasted WVU’s Emily Mathis 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to also progress to the next stage of the initial singles event. Broomfield is currently facing Howard’s Umarah Mughnee, as Timko challenges Pitt’s Amanda Wickman in matches that, if the Marshall ladies win, will see them both advance to the Main Draw of the singles competition.
Meanwhile, the singles brackets for Saturday’s Main Draw were determined, and – pending the potential qualification of Timko and Broomfield – no less than five Marshall ladies are scheduled for tournament play.
Marshall No. 1 Dominika Zaprazna will start things off for the Herd against a TBD qualifier at 11 a.m. on Saturday, while sophomore Ellie Ball will be readying herself to play in a noon match against Old Dominion’s Aleksandra Mitrovska. Senior Kara Kucin will then play in a 1 p.m. match with Longwood’s Malon Allgurin to conclude the Herd’s early contests.
Action will resume at 4 p.m. with junior No. 2 Maria Voscekova going head-to-head with Navy’s Emani Decquir, leaving freshman Dana Oppinger to play in a 5 p.m. match against Georgetown’s Kelly Comolli for the Herd’s final singles match of the day.
