HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall tennis completed the second day of the ITA Atlantic Regional today in Charlottesville, Va., hosted by Virginia.
Sophomore Dana Oppinger (Weingarten, Germany) advanced to the round of 16 in the main singles draw by defeating Maria Khval of Liberty (6-3, 6-4). Oppinger will take on Old Dominion’s Ingrid Vojcinakova on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
“I’m really impressed about how Dana (Oppinger) performed today,” coach John Mercer said. “She keeps improving on a daily basis and just has to keep working hard.”
The Thundering Herd pair of Oppinger and senior Karli Timko (Houston, Pa.) knocked off Liberty’s pair of Maria Khval and Belen Rivera (8-7) to advance to the round of 16 in the main doubles draw. They will challenge No. 1 seed Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans of William and Mary on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. The pair is the No. 7 nationally ranked doubles team in the country and won the event last year.
“Karli and Dana face a tough challenge tomorrow,” commented Mercer. “The William and Mary seniors rallied last year to win the doubles bracket and they are the odds on favorite to win once again. Karli and Dana just have to go out there and play their game.”
