BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Marshall tennis’s No. 1 doubles team of Dominika Zaprazna and Maria Voscekova defeated William & Mary’s Anik Cepeda and Leeza Nemchinov, 8-5 to advance to the semifinals of the ITA Atlantic Regional and give the senior Zaprazna her 100th career doubles victory in Thundering Herd colors.
The Marshall pair has now beaten teams from Virginia Tech, VCU, and William & Mary en route to its place in the semifinal of the 64 team tournament and will play UVA’s Erin Vierra and Maci Epstein at 9 a.m. on Tuesday for a shot to advance to the championship match.
The duo’s progress marks the best performance by a Marshall team at the regional tournament since Zaprazna and Michaela Kissell made the finals in 2010. Ironically, Zaprazna and Kissell defeated Vierra and her UVA teammate in the semifinals of that year’s tournament, a feat that the Slovakian senior will look to repeat when she faces Vierra again on Tuesday morning.
Monday’s quarterfinal win over William & Mary also marked an individual milestone for Zaprazna, who moved into triple digits in the career doubles wins category of the Herd record books with her 100th career doubles victory. Her total ranks her sixth on the all-time Marshall list, just nine short of the record held by current Marshall tennis assistant Kellie Schmitt.
“It’s great to be in this position,” said head coach John Mercer. “For us it’s another opportunity to carry on the tradition of success we’ve had in this tournament. Dominika and Maria are both excited about it, and I’m hopeful they have another good day tomorrow.”
The winner of tomorrow’s semifinal match will advance to play the winner of the Belaya and Loomans (W&M) vs. Nauta and Xi (UVA) match in the finals later that afternoon. The champion of the ITA Atlantic Regional doubles tournament will qualify for the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, which are held in Flushing, N.Y., from Nov. 8-11.
