Schmitt Knocked Out in Semis of ITA East Regional
At-large bid for ITA Indoor Championship still a possibility
Oct. 24, 2006
HANOVER, N.H. - Harvard University's Beier Ko defeated Marshall's Kellie Schmitt on Tuesday to end the Thundering Herd sophomore's run at the ITA East Regional.
Schmitt, who competed each day in doubles and singles, could not match the momentum Ko had from singles play. Ko, the No. 88 player in the preseason ITA poll and the fifth seed in the East Regional, took the semifinal victory over Schmitt in straight sets 6-0, 6-1.
Marshall head coach John Mercer said he was proud of the way Schmitt competed and represented Marshall.
"Kellie fought hard but unfortunately she was a little over-matched," Mercer said. "I'm sure she will bounce back and hopefully she will get an at large at the indoors."
Schmitt still has a possibility to make it into the ITA Indoor Championships with an at-large bid.
The Herd's next tournament will be the Wake Forest Tournament on Nov. 3.
