PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Marshall University women's tennis team completed day one of the Women's Wilson/ITA East Regional Championships, Friday, at the University of Pennsylvania Levy Pavilion in Philadelphia, Pa. with all day competition in the singles and doubles qualifying rounds.
Marshall's Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) and Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) represented the Thundering Herd in the singles qualifying draw. The pair of Deanna Bailey (McDonough, Ga.) and Keener as well as the duo of Lock and Catherine Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.) competed in the doubles qualifying round.
As the number four seed, Lock defeated Yale's Sarah Lederhandler, 6-3, 6-3. Then the junior took a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 decision over Rickmond's Erin Clark to earn a spot in the singles main draw competition.
Keener (seventh seed) took a straight-set victory over Natasha Makarova from Columbia, 6-2, 6-2. Then the senior defeated Cornell's Sinziana Chis, 6-1, 7-5, to advance to the singles main draw Saturday.
The pair of Bailey and Keener (third seed) fell to the Princeton tandem of Melissa Sainotz and Lauren McHale, 8-5. The Brown duo of Sara Mansur and Cassandra Herzberg defeated the pair of Lock and Kellner, 8-0, in the doubles qualifying round.
The championship continues with singles and doubles main draw matches Saturday at 8 a.m. at the Levy Tennis Pavilion. The round of 64 and 32 doubles and the rounds of 128 singles will be played following the opening rounds. All seeded players receive a bye and will not play a singles match Saturday.
The No. 42 ranked senior Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) will be the number one seed in the singles main draw. Senior Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) stands as the 17th seed in the singles main draw. Sophomore Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) and Bailey will also compete in the singles main draw.
The 14th-ranked senior tandem of Schmitt and Soor will compete against top-ranked opponents as the top seed in the doubles main draw.
Tournament play will continue Sunday at 8 a.m. with the round of 16 doubles. At 9 a.m., the round of 64 singles will begin and followed by the round of 32 singles.
Monday competition starts at 9 a.m. with the doubles quarterfinal round. Singles round of 16 will begin at 10 a.m., with the singles quarterfinals and semifinals of doubles to follow.
Doubles finals draw and singles semifinal draw will start at 9 a.m., Tuesday, with the singles final draw to follow.
As the number four East Regional team, the Herd was allowed for the first time the maximum number of entries into the championships, which is six single players and three double teams.
The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the Nov. 6-9, 2008 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Virginia at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.
