CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- The Thundering Herd tennis team returned home from the University of North Carolina a winner on Sunday night, as the team concluded the Kitty Harrison Invitational with a doubles title and plenty of momentum for the upcoming spring season.
Junior Dominika Zaprazna and sophomore Maria Voscekova went undefeated through the invitational, defeating Texas A&M, UVA, Duke, and Minnesota's No. 1 doubles teams en-route to claiming first place overall in the double's field. The Marshall pair defeated a host of nationally ranked teams, and claimed its second tournament victory of the fall since winning the Wake Forest Invitational over a month ago.
"Dominika and Maria had a great weekend going 4-0 and claiming first place in the doubles tournament," said Head Coach John Mercer. "They've been getting better and better in every tournament we've played, and really put together a solid fall season. I'm looking forward to seeing them compete this spring."
Following a successful first day, the Herd beat Furman 3-2 before falling 1-4 to UNC in back-to-back singles matches on Saturday. Zaprazna and Voscekova then defeated Duke's Clayton and Gorny 8-5 to conclude day-two action with a win.
On Sunday, Marshall fell 1-4 to UNC-Greensboro in singles, but watched as Zaprazna and Voscekova took the double's crown with a victory over the Minnesota Golden Gophers in doubles.
The Herd has now concluded its tournament action for the fall 2011 season and will take a two-month hiatus before beginning its official 2012 season at Eastern Michigan on January 14. For final day results from the UNC-Kitty Harrison Invitational, please click here.
