Schmitt Defeats Ranked Opponent at Kitty Harrison Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Marshall University women's tennis team claimed nine victories in day one of play, Friday at the fifth annual Kitty Harrison Invitational at the University of North Carolina campus. The Thundering Herd competed against Winthrop and North Carolina in singles and Duke and East Tennessee State in doubles competition at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center during all-day play.

The annual invitational is in honor of former North Carolina's women's tennis coach, Kitty Harrison. She led the Tar Heels to four ACC Championships from 1977-1998.

"We played a lot of tennis today, which is great for the team," Marshall's head coach John Mercer said. "Kellie picked-up an excellent victory against a ranked opponent."

The 42nd-ranked senior Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) upset North Carolina's 23rd-ranked Katrina Tsang, 7-6, 6-4, at the number one position. The 76th-ranked Austin Smith defeated senior Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) 6-2, 6-2 at the number two. Junior transfer Deanna Bailey (McDonough, Ga.) fell to Shinann Featherston, 6-3, 7-6(5), at the three.

At the number four mark, North Carolina's Laura Reichert defeated freshman Kristina Koprcina (Split, Croatia), 7-5, 6-1. Senior Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) took a straight-set victory over Jelena Durisic, 7-5, 6-0, playing the five spot. Jocelyn Ffriend defeated sophomore transfer Catherine Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.), 6-2, 4-6, (10-4), at the number six position.

In singles matches against Winthrop, the Herd took four victories. Bailey took a straight-set victory over Patricia Coimbra, 6-4, 6-4, at the number two mark. Keener took a 7-6, 6-3, 10-4 decision over Sara Abutovic at the three. Kellner defeated Lisa Wilkinson, 6-1, 6-3, at the number four position. Playing the number six, Koprcina took a straight-set victory over Paula Pereira, 6-3, 6-0.

Winthrop's Elizaveta Zaytseva defeated Soor, 6-1, 4-6, 10-7 at the number one position. At the number five mark, Raich fell 7-5, 3-6, 11-9 to Sandra Herrera.

The 14th-ranked senior tandem of Schmitt and Soor took an 8-5 advantage over Duke's Reka Zsilinszka and Ellah Nze at doubles number one. Bailey and Kellner defeated East Tennessee State's pair, 8-4, while Kellner and Koprcina finished the doubles sweep with an 8-6 decision over East Tennessee State's pair of Yevgeniya Stupak and Paula Jamie.

"We hope to have another successful day of matches tomorrow," Coach Mercer added.

Thirteen teams will be competing this weekend including North Carolina, Marshall, Duke, East Tennessee State, Maryland, College of Charleston, William & Mary, Georgia Tech, Furman, North Carolina-Greensboro, North Carolina State, and Winthrop.

Among the 13 teams there will be 18 nationally-ranked singles players and eight ranked doubles teams competing this weekend.

Marshall will continue all-day competition at 9 a.m., Saturday against North Carolina and North Carolina-Greensboro in doubles competition and then face Duke and East Tennessee State in singles action. The Herd will conclude play Sunday in its final invitational of the fall season.
