Nov. 9, 2012
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - All three of Marshall's doubles teams won their opening round matches on Friday morning to advance to the semifinal round of the Kitty Harrison Invitational at UNC.
Beginning in the Blue Flight, Marshall's No.1 duo of Dominika Zaprazna and Maria Voscekova defeated Virginia Tech's Mita and Williford 8-6 to progress to the semifinal round of the competition and keep alive the pair's hopes of repeating as Kitty Harrison doubles champions.
In the White Flight, No. 2 tandem Ellie Ball and Kai Broomfield downed Maryland's Van Berlo and Gealer to similarly progress to the semifinals, while Karli Timko and Dana Oppinger did likewise with an 8-2 victory over Minnesota's Mozia and Lambert.
All three teams are now set to play at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning for a chance to progress to the finals of their respective flights. Should both of the Thundering Herd teams in the White Flight win their respective semifinal matches, they would square-off against each other in a championship showdown at 10:30 a.m. Zaprazna and Voscekova will also play at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning if they can defeat Duke's Clayton and Mulholland in the semifinal match.
In singles play, Zaprazna was ousted by the aforementioned Clayton 6-3, 6-1 in the second round to fall to the consolation side of the Blue Flight. She will join Voscekova on that end, who lost in the opening round to Clayton's compatriot, Mulholland, 6-2, 6-3.
In the White Flight, Ellie Ball strung together consecutive victories over Norfolk State and Virginia Tech opposition to secure herself a spot in a 1 p.m. semifinal match on Saturday. The Herd's other White Flight competitor, Karli Timko, lost her opening match of the tournament 6-2, 6-4 and was relegated to the consolation side of the bracket.
In the Navy Flight, freshman Dana Oppinger defeated Megan Conley of Virginia Tech 6-0, 6-0 to advance to round two, where she brushed aside UNC Greensboro's Sourneya Anane 6-1, 6-2. She will now face Minnesota's Jessika Mozia in the semifinal at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The same schedule applies for Broomfield, who after defeating Greensboro's Amy Ellis and Virginia Tech's Tea Ivanovic, also qualified for a Navy Flight semifinal. She will face Virginia Tech's Kellie Williford at 1 p.m.
