SKILLMAN, N.J. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its preseason Top 75 national team rankings and has the Thundering Herd starting the 2011 season at No. 53.
The Herd is coming off a 2010 campaign in which MU finished 19-7 while making it to the Conference USA championship match. MU earned its highest national team ranking in 2010 at No. 28 and also beat its highest ranked opponent in program history, defeating No. 27 SMU in the C-USA semifinals. Marshall returns five of its eight players from last year’s squad.
Senior Michaela Kissell headlines the returning players as she was given a preseason singles ranking of No. 27. Kissell captured the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship title and earned the right to play in the National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships where she defeated then-ranked No. 9 Venise Chan of Washington.
Kissell also finds herself in the doubles rankings as she and teammate Dominika Zaprazna begin the 2011 season ranked No. 63. MU’s tandem was First-Team All-Conference USA in doubles last season.
The Herd is one of four C-USA teams in the rankings along with No. 27 SMU, No. 32 Tulsa and No. 48 Rice. Marta Lesniak of SMU has the highest C-USA singles ranking at No. 2 in the country.
Marshall begins its season next Friday, January 14, as the Herd hosts Morehead State at noon and Eastern Michigan at 5 p.m. The match will be held at the Huntington Tennis Center.
