YPSILANTI, Mich.- The ladies of the Thundering Herd tennis team have taken to the road for their first match of the 2012 season, as they head north to face the Eagles of Eastern Michigan University.

Head Coach John Mercer is entering his 26th season in charge of the Marshall squad, and is teaming-up with first year assistant coach Kelcy McKenna to lead the Herd into action at the Chippewa Racquet Club this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Marshall’s number one doubles team of Dominika Zaprazna and Maria Voscekova won two tournaments this past fall and possesses a No. 35 national ranking, but will face a stern test when it squares off against Eastern Michigan’s No. 57 ranked pair of Nino Mebuke and Miriam Westerink in Ypsilanti on Saturday afternoon.

The Herd experienced a fair amount of success in the fall, and is coming off a 2010-11 year that saw the team post an impressive 18-6 record. Kristina Koprcina is the lone senior on the squad, and is rejoined by juniors Dominika Zaprazna and Kara Kucin, and sophomores Karli Timko and Maria Voscekova. Freshmen Ellie Ball and Kia Broomfield are the newcomers to the squad for the 2011-12 season, and will be hoping to make an impact from the start.

Saturday’s match not only marks the beginning of the season for Marshall, but also the beginning of a four-game away stretch that will see the Herd stay on the road until the February 4 home opener against Morehead State. Following Saturday’s season opener against EMU, the team will play on the road against Kentucky, UNC, and VCU or Brown before serving-up the opening match in Huntington at 1:00 p.m. on February 4.
