Tennis Finishes Final Day at UVa Winter Invite

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-  Marshall tennis closed out the final day of the UVa Winter Invite. The team faced competitors from no. 13 Virginia and no. 39  VCU.

Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada) continued her winning ways, defeating Sitilia Rencheli of VCU 6-2, 6-2. Broomfield was victorious all three days of the UVa Invite, taking two wins in doubles with partner Rachael Morales (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) on Saturday and Sunday. 

First-semester freshmen Derya Turhan (Bad Salszuflen, Germany) and Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) continued to grow more comfortable as they finished the first tournament of their college careers. Turhan fell to Marie Faure (UVA) 7-5, 6-1 and Pomyatinskaya was defeated by Maci Epstein of UVA (6-0, 6-0). 

Both competed in doubles as well- Turhan with Dana Oppinger (Weingarten, Germany) and Pomyatinskaya with senior Karli Timko (Houston, Pa.). Turhan and Oppinger lost to nationally ranked (no.8)  duo Julia Elbaba and Rachel Pierson (UVA) 6-2. Pomyatinskaya and Timko were defeated by Epstein and partner Caryssa Peretz (UVA) 6-0. 

Marshall will next take the court Saturday Jan. 25 in a home dual match against Morehead State. The match is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
