IRVING, TEXAS - The Marshall University tennis team earned its seventh Conference USA Player of the Week accolade with junior Kellie Schmitt's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) second consecutive selection in 2008, as announced Tuesday by the conference office. The weekly honor was the sixth of Schmitt's career.
The Thundering Herd's 19th-ranked singles player went a perfect 2-0 in both singles and doubles last week to help lead Marshall over No. 39 University of Virginia and the University of Richmond, 6-1.
"This has been a great start for Kellie," Marshall's head coach John Mercer said. "She has had some real quality wins."
At the singles No. 1 position, Schmitt defeated Virginia's Jennifer Stevens in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-1. Also at the number one, Schmitt took a 7-6 (10-8), 7-5 decision against Richmond's Pamela Duran.
The No. 15 doubles team of Schmitt and Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) rolled over the Cavaliers' duo of Alexander and Pereira, 8-3, and the Spiders' pair of Duran and Vosters, 8-3, at the number one doubles mark.
In both singles and doubles, Schmitt owns an undefeated record of 5-0 so far this season.
"She has been a great leader for us," coach Mercer added. "She has helped lead us to a 4-1 start."
Schmitt and the No. 65 Marshall (4-1) will continue action on Friday, Feb. 1 against the No. 40 foe, North Carolina State (2-0) at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C. at 5:00 p.m.
