HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — After going 0-2 in its first weekend of play, the Marshall women’s tennis team will compete in the four-team Courtside Classic this weekend. The Herd will play host institution Minnesota Saturday at 3 p.m. and either Utah or DePaul Sunday.
 
A LOOK BACK: ITA KICK-OFF WEEKEND
Marshall opened its season with a pair of losses at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Gainesville, Florida. The Herd dropped matches to ULM Saturday and Cal State Fullerton Sunday. Marshall got off to slow starts in both matches, trailing 3-1 to ULM before making a late run that came up short and dropping the doubles point to Cal State Fullerton.
 
MILESTONE WATCH
Head coach John Mercer is seven wins away from reaching 250 in his career. Brooke Lashway and Anna Smith are looking for their first singles wins during dual match play in a Marshall uniform. Ana Marhuenda seeks consecutive singles wins for the first time in her short career. Marija Bogicevic is four singles wins away from reaching 30 career wins. Stephanie Smith is one singles win away from reaching 50 in her career. Brooke Lashway is one singles win away from reaching 10 in her career. Maddie Silver needs two singles wins to reach 60 in her career. Bogicevic is also one doubles win away from reaching 30 in her career.
 
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GOPHERS
Minnesota goes into its match against Marshall undefeated for the second straight season. The Golden Gophers are 3-0 under first year head coach Catrina Thompson, who replaced Chuck Merzbacher, who retired, then un-retired to take the men’s tennis head coaching position at Chattanooga. Minnesota has a trio of singles players who are 3-0 in dual match play in Camila Vargas Gomez, Caitlyn Merzbacher and Tina Kreinis. The doubles pairs of Kreinis and Caroline Ryba and Merzbacher and Mehvish Safdar are also 3-0 in dual match play.
 
SCOUTING THE UTES
Utah is 0-1 this season after losing to Florida State as part of a tournament in Hawai’i. The Utes have yet to earn a point this season after getting swept by the Seminoles, 7-0. Utah finished 10-11 last season and reached the second round of the Pac-12 tournament.
 
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEMONS
DePaul is 2-0 this season after defeating Saint Louis and Milwaukee. The Blue Demons have players with 2-0 records at each of the top three singles spots in Keisha Clousing, Patricia Lancranjan and Marija Jovicic. The Blue Demons as a team are 3-1 in doubles play, having not played a single finished match at No. 3.

The Marshall women's tennis team won its second consecutive match against a Big Ten Conference opponent Saturday, defeating the Minnesota Golden Gophers, 7-0, at the Huntington Tennis Club.
