WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Marshall Thundering Herd women's tennis team will on the road again this weekend for a pair of matches. Up first for the Herd will be No. 12 William & Mary on Friday at 5 p.m. followed by a trip to Ohio State for a 1 p.m. match Saturday.
Marshall (5-3) will be led by sophomore Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park), who will likely be facing her toughest competition yet in the Tribe's fifth-ranked Megan Moulton-Levy. Schmitt has put up a 7-0 record so far on the season with no match going beyond two sets.
William & Mary (6-0) is coming off a weekend upset victory over then No. 1 Georgia Tech and has been firing on all cylinders defeating three top 35 ranked teams in a row. The Tribe has taken every double point it has played and is anchored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's No. 1 doubles team and ITA National Indoor Champions, Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic.
Marshall will not only face its highest ranked opponent of the season when it takes on William & Mary, but also a team it has never beaten. The Herd is 0-5 all-time against the Tribe with the most recent loss coming last season, 6-1.
Saturday the Herd will face Ohio State (5-1) in Williamsburg. The Buckeyes' lone loss of the season came to 66th-ranked Virginia Tech this past Saturday. Marshall has faced Ohio State only once before. The meeting came in 1999 and was played in Columbus with the Buckeyes taking the victory 7-0.
After this weekend's play the Herd will end its two week road trip and return to the friendly confines of the Huntington Tennis Club where it will host a trio of matches on Feb. 23 and 25.
