RICHMOND, Va. - The Thundering Herd tennis team began its nine-match road swing with a 5-2 win over the University of Richmond Friday night at the Country Club of Virginia.

With the win, Marshall improves to 6-5 in the midst of its toughest schedule in school history.

The loss drops the Spiders to 2-5 on the year.

"This was a good win over a good regional opponent," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. "We fought hard when it got tought to pull out some solid wins."

Marshall got the lead in the match by winning the doubles point. The Herd picked up a win at No. 1 from the combo of Danielle Hock (Wigan, England) and partner Lille Nzudie (Duoala, Cameroon), 9-7. Ashley Kroh(Louisville, Ky.) and Shannon Brown (Overland Park, Kan.) were also victorious at No. 2 with an 8-4 win against Courtney Klein and Robin Carter.

In singles play, the Herd picked up wins from Kroh and Hock at the No. 3 and 4 positions and also from freshman Jeanne Schwartz(West Palm Beach, Fla.) at No. 5.

Kroh picked up the win 6-3, 6-3 over Klein, while Hock fought to a 6-2, 7-6 win over Meghan Wolfgram. Schwartz knocked off Jelena Zivanovic 6-1, 6-3.

The Herd won by default at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles with the Spiders only having five players due to injury. Richmond picked up wins at No. 1 singles with Lindsay Cox defeating Nzudie, 6-1, 6-2 and at No. 2 with Carter beating Joelle Good (Zurich, Switzerland) 6-2, 6-4.

"It was good to get this win to help get our confidence going after last weekend against Penn State," Mercer said. "Hopefully this will give us something to build on before heading to California."

After playing seven teams that have been ranked in the ITA Top 75 already this season, it doesn't get any easier as Marshall will have a week off to prepare for its spring trip to San Diego, Calif., where it will play ranked foes Washington State and San Diego.
