HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University women’s tennis team will battle the ETSU Buccaneers this Friday in the schools’ first matchup since the Thundering Herd won 6-1 back in 1997.
Trailing 3-4 in the all-time series, Marshall will view Friday’s 1:00 p.m. match as the perfect opportunity to not only draw level with the Buccaneers, but to also return to .500 for the first time since February 18.
The Buccaneers enter the match in possession of a 3-4 record but are riding a two-match winning streak that includes a 5-2 victory over Liberty and a 6-1 win over Western Carolina. The Herd has also faced Liberty this season, sweeping the Flames 7-0 last Friday. The only other common opponent between the teams is Virginia Tech, whom Marshall beat 4-3 last Saturday, and ETSU fell to 2-5 back in early February.
Friday’s showdown will be the first of two home matches for the Herd on the weekend, with a Sunday matchup against WVU also slated to take place in Huntington. Both matches are scheduled to be played at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center on Marshall’s campus if the weather permits. Clear skies, temperatures in excess of 50 degrees, and winds below 20 mph are necessary for the outdoor matches to take place. If the weather does not permit, the contests will be moved to the Huntington Tennis Club’s indoor courts.
