HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University womenís tennis team edged past the University of Richmond 4-3 today, at the Marshall University Tennis Courts.


The Herd started off the match by winning all three doubles matches and capturing the doubles point. Marshall has clinched the doubles point twelve of thirteen times this season and swept the doubles point seven times. Senior Alice Sukner (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and junior Lille Nzudie (Douala, Cameroon) struck first for the Herd with an 8-3 victory over Richmondís Meghan Wolfgram and Patty Devlin in the number two doubles slot. In the number one doubles position 13th ranked senior Jessica Johnson (Sewickly, Pa.) and junior Ashley Kroh (Louisville, Ky.) downed Lindsay Cox and Beatrice Grasu 8-5, to secure the doubles point. The win marks the duoís twelfth consecutive win. Senior Meghan Skalsky (East Lansing, Mich.) and junior Danielle Hock (Wiggin, England) wrapped up the sweep for Marshall with a 9-7 victory over the Spiderís Robin Carter and Courtney Klein, in the number three doubles spot.

In singles action, Marshall quickly took a 2-0 lead when Johnson defeated Grau in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, at the number one singles slot. Richmondís Lindsay Cox locked the Spiders first singles win, defeating Kroh 7-5, 6-1 in the number three singles position. Marshallís Hock responded with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Klein in the number six spot. The Spiders came back with victories in the number two and four singles positions, including a three set match between MUís Sukner and Richmondís Wolfgram, bringing the score to 3-3. Junior Joelle Good (Zurich, Switzerland) battled back after dropping her first set to the Spiderís Emily Applegate, to clinch the win for the Herd in a stellar three set battle, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

The win moves Marshall to 10-3 on the season, while Richmond falls to 5-6.


Marshall will return to action on Sunday, March 21, when they face Mid-American Conference rival Eastern Michigan at 1:00 p.m. at the Marshall University Tennis Courts.
