HOUSTON, Tx.- The seventh-seeded Marshall tennis team kicks off its participation in the 2013 Conference USA Tennis Championship with a first-round match against the host, and 10th-seeded, Houston Cougars at 9:30 a.m. (8:30 a.m. CT) on Thursday.
The match had been scheduled to begin three and a half hours later, but was pushed up due to inclement weather in the forecast.
The Herd (12-10), which faced the most difficult schedule in its history in 2013, is coming off wins in six of its last nine matches, while Houston (13-10) knocked off Prairie View by a score of 6-1 on Monday to snap a five-match losing skid, which featured four nationally-ranked opponents.
In singles competition, Marshall's Karlyn Timko has won 10 of her last 11 matches and Kara Kucin has picked up victories in six of her past nine contests. Ellie Ball also has a five-match winning streak, while Dominika Zaprazna has won three-straight at the No. 1 spot.
Marshall has also seen its share of success in doubles. Zaprazna and Kucin are 6-1 at No.1, Ball and Maria Voscekova are 5-1 at No. 2 and Timko and Dana Oppinger are 12-7 at No. 3.
Senior Maja Kazimieruk has highlighted play for the Cougars as the Poznan, Poland, native has put together one of the most impressive seasons in school history with a combined record of 34-7 in dual play this spring.
Kazimieruk leads the team in singles action with an 18-3 mark at positions No. 1-5 and is currently a perfect 11-0 in the city of Houston, while teaming up with junior Celia Fraser in doubles play for a 15-2 mark, as the duo has reeled off 13 consecutive victories.
All six Cougars in the singles lineup, that also includes Elena Kordolaimi, Fraser, Rocio Martin Fernandez, Charlotte Phillips and Dionne Sanders, feature a winning record and at least 10 victories in dual play.
