TULSA, Okla. - The No. 59 Marshall University women's tennis team is at the University of Tulsa for the Conference USA Women's Tennis Championships this Thursday through Sunday. The Thundering Herd plays Friday afternoon after earning a first-round bye as the No. 4 seed.
Marshall (17-6) will play the winner of Thursday's 5-12 matchup between the fifth-seeded UCF Knights and the 12th seeded UTEP Miners on Friday at 2 p.m.
"We are excited to be here," Head Coach John Mercer said. "This year's tournament should be wide open. There are a lot of good teams and there is a lot of parity. We will see if we can play some good tennis this weekend and leave on top."
No. 40 Michaela Kissell comes into the tournament as the second highest ranked singles player. No. 29 Marta Lesniak of SMU claims the highest ranking. The two could potentially meet head-to-head if both Marshall and SMU reach the semi-finals.
SMU is the top seeded team with an overall record of 22-3 and a national ranking of No. 27. Host Tulsa claims the two seed as the Golden Hurricane finished the regular season with a record of 18-5 and a No. 35 ranking. No. 47 Rice earns the three seed as the Owls post a 13-8 overall record.
The winner of this weekend's tournament earns Conference USA's automatic team berth into the NCAA Championships. SMU is the defending C-USA champion.
