Marshall University's junior Kellie Schmitt is the Thundering Herd's second student-athlete of the week and is a Pittsburgh, Pa. native. Schmitt led the Herd with an impressive 22-3 spring record at the number one position and a 33-7 overall season record. Schmitt recently was awarded by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as the East Regional Player-to-Watch award, which is selected by the East Region Committee of coaches. She is one of eight finalists for the National ITA Player-to-Watch honor to be announced May 20, at www.itatennis.com and at the NCAA championships. Also, Schmitt garnered her second consecutive Conference USA Player of the Year and All-Conference First Team honors with an automatic bid into the 2008 NCAA Singles Competition as the 55th-ranked player. She finished the fall season as the No. 3 East Regional singles player and earned the 2007 October Player of the Month. Schmitt also was honored with three C-USA Player of the Week awards this spring.
With teammate Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden), the junior pair stands as the 28th-ranked and the No. 1 East Regional doubles team. The Herd pair finished 19-3 in the spring at the number one slot and 28-9 overall with an automatic bid into the 2008 NCAA Doubles Competition. The duo earned All-Conference Doubles Team and Outstanding Doubles Team of the C-USA Championship honors. The 2008 NCAA Singles and Doubles Competitions are set to start, Wednesday, May 21 in Tulsa, Okla. Schmitt is a sports management and marketing major.
