@Herd_Tennis Announces 2017-18 Schedule

The Herd finished the 2016-17 season with a 14-10 record.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall University head tennis coach John Mercer announced the full schedule of the 2017-18 season Wednesday. The Herd will compete in three fall tournaments and a pair of invite-only events in the fall before transitioning to a 22-match spring season.
 
“This is one of the toughest schedules that we have put together during my time at Marshall. We have matches that span both coasts and will be challenging for us,” Mercer said.
 
The Herd opens the fall season at the South Carolina Fall Invitational in Columbia, S.C. from Sept. 15-17. The Herd will take a week off before returning to the court at the prestigious ITA All-American Tournament in Los Angeles from Sept 30-Oct. 8. The Herd heads to Blacksburg, Va. for the ITA Atlantic Regional from Oct. 13-17 before closing out the fall slate with the CofC Classic from Nov. 3-5 in Charleston, S.C. Any regional winners will compete in the Oracle/ITA Fall National Championships in Indian Wells, Calif. From Nov. 1-5.
 
The Herd will begin the spring season with a pair of early tournaments. Marshall will play in the Gainesville regional of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Jan. 27-28. The Herd will play Louisiana-Monroe on Jan. 27 and will play either Cal State Fullerton or defending national champion Florida on Jan. 28. The Herd then heads north for the Courtside Classic in Minneapolis on Feb. 3-4. Marshall will take on host Minnesota on Feb. 3 and will play either DePaul or Utah on Feb. 4. The Herd then returns to Huntington for its first home match against Virginia Tech on Feb. 9 before trips to Penn State (Feb. 11), Louisville (Feb. 16) and Miami (Ohio) (Feb. 18). Marshall then plays a pair of Conference USA matches against FIU (Feb. 23) and North Texas (Feb. 24) Both matches will be played at North Texas.
 
After the long road trip, the Herd plays three home matches in a span of four days, hosting Cincinnati (Mar. 2), Conference USA foe Old Dominion (Mar. 3) and VCU (Mar. 5). Marshall then hits the road for matches against Navy (Mar. 10) and Maryland (Mar. 16) before heading to Las Vegas for matches against UNLV (Mar. 22) and Denver (Mar. 23). The match against Denver will be played at UNLV. The Herd resumes its long-standing rivalry with West Virginia on Mar. 31 in Huntington before hitting the road for a Conference USA match against Middle Tennessee on Apr. 7. The Herd ends its home slate against Liberty on Apr. 12 before hitting the road for its final two matches against Winthrop (Apr. 14) and Georgia State (Apr. 15).
 
After the regular season, the Herd will head to the Conference USA tournament in Norfolk, Va. from Apr. 19-22. The conference tournament champion will receive an automatic bid into the 64-team field for the NCAA tournament.
