Herd to Play in UVA Fall Invitational Tournament
Sept. 13, 2012
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The Thundering Herd tennis team will open its 2012 fall season this weekend at the UVA Fall Invitational. The 10-team tournament will run Friday through Sunday at the Snyder Tennis Center, with play beginning at 9 a.m. each day.
The event is setup as a bracket-style tournament consisting of four singles and two doubles flights. Play will begin with the first round of the doubles tournament on Friday, as the Herd places three teams into the two doubles flights. Last season’s No. 1 doubles duo of Dominika Zaprazna and Maria Voscekova will start at 9 a.m. against UVA’s Fuccillo and Peretz in the A Flight, while the Herd’s No. 2 pairing of Ellie Ball and Kara Kucin serves it up simultaneously against UVA’s No. 20 ranked tandem of Tomlijanovic and Vierra, also in the A Flight.
In the B Flight Marshall is represented by the lone team of Karli Timko and Dana Oppinger, who will attempt to progress to the second round with a 9 a.m. match against Old Dominion’s Pires and Vukovic.
Singles play is set to begin shortly after the opening round of doubles matches on Friday, as all eight members of the Herd play matches in the top three brackets of the solo competition. Marshall will be represented in the singles A-1 Flight by senior Dominika Zaprazna, who accumulated a 10-8 singles record from the number one spot last season. Her match is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. against VCU’s Darya Yakauleva.
In the A-2 Flight Marshall boasts the presence of two athletes, junior Maria Voscekova and freshman Dana Oppinger. Oppinger will play against VCU’s Sali Kvitashvili at 10:30 a.m., while Voscekova, who led the team with a 13-6 singles record from the No. 2 court last season, is paired against Old Dominion’s Diana Ivanova for an 11:30 a.m. match.
Senior Kara Kucin and sophomore Ellie Ball start things for the Herd in the B Flight, playing in their respective singles matches against UNC-Greensboro’s Annette Rios and South Carolina’s Josefin Andersson at 11:45 a.m. Opening round play then wraps-up for Marshall with sophomore Kai Broomfield and junior Karli Timko’s noon matches against William & Mary’s Sydney Smith and Furman’s Kelly Sullivan, respectively.
