@Herd_Tennis Opens Fall Season at South Carolina Invite
The Herd returns four players from the 2016-17 team
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Marshall women’s tennis team opens its fall campaign this weekend when it participates in the South Carolina Fall Invitational Friday through Sunday at the Carolina Tennis Center in Columbia, S.C.
Marshall is one of eight teams competing in the invitational. The Herd is joined by host South Carolina, Conference USA foe Middle Tennessee, James Madison, Mercer, North Florida, Liberty and Winthrop.

Marshall returns four players from last year’s team that won 14 matches. The Herd is led by seniors Maddie Silver and Stephanie Smith. Silver and Smith were both Second Team All-Conference USA selections for the 2016-17 season. The Herd also returns senior Marija Bogicevic and sophomore Daniela Dankanych.
WELCOME TO THE HERD
In addition to the four returners, the Herd welcomes three newcomers to the team this year. Freshmen Anna Smith and Ana Marhuenda were the two signees of head coach John Mercer’s 2017 recruiting class and sophomore Brooke Lashway transferred to Marshall after spending her freshman campaign at South Florida.
WE MEET AGAIN
The South Carolina Fall Invitational features a trio of teams that the Herd will play during the spring dual match season. Marshall will host Liberty on April 12. The Herd travels to Middle Tennessee on April 7 and Winthrop on April 14. The Herd will also see James Madison at the ITA Atlantic Regional in October.
The Herd went 2-0 against teams at the invitational last year, defeating James Madison and Winthrop.
MARSHALL’S SCHEDULE OF PLAY
Singles play vs. James Madison – 9 a.m.
Doubles play vs. Middle Tennessee – 1 p.m.
Singles play vs. South Carolina – 8 a.m.
Doubles play vs. James Madison – 1 p.m.
Sunday’s schedule will be based on a points system accumulated from the first two days of play.
