HAVE YOU HERD?
Marshall opened the fall season with 11 overall match wins at the South Carolina Fall Invitational. The Herd too six doubles matches, winning two on each of the three days, and five singles matches, taking three on the first day and two on the final day of play.
The Herd is led by Daniela Dankanych, who posted a 5-1 record at the South Carolina Fall Invitational. Dankanych went 2-1 in singles play and a perfect 3-0 in doubles play with partner Anna Smith. Dankanych dropped her only match of the invitational Saturday in a third-set tiebreaker against South Carolina’s Megan Davies.
Freshmen Anna Smith and Ana Marhuenda each made an impact during their first matches with the Herd. Smith went 4-2 during the invitational, sweeping the three doubles matches with Dankanych and taking a singles match on the first day. Marhuenda won singles and doubles matches on the first day of play.
Marshall will rely heavily on the contributions of seniors Maddie Silver and Stephanie Smith this season. Silver and Smith were both Second Team All-Conference USA honorees last season and played a major role in helping the Herd earn the No. 3 seed in Conference USA. The duo combined for nearly 40 singles wins and over 20 wins during the 2016-17 season and helped the Herd reach the quarterfinals of the Conference USA tournament and finished with a 14-11 record in 2016-17.
