HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Marshall women’s tennis team continues its fall season Friday when it begins play at the ITA Atlantic Regional.
The tournament, which will consist of teams from Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. will take place at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the campus of Virginia Tech and takes place from Oct. 13-17. The regional will consist of a 64-player singles bracket and a 48-team doubles bracket along with qualifying brackets for entrants to earn their way into the main draws.
HAVE YOU HERD?
The Herd will have four members competing in the ITA Atlantic Regional, including a seeded singles player and a seeded doubles team. Maddie Silver leads the Herd competitors and is seeded 16th for the tournament. Anna Smith and Stephanie Smith will also compete in the main singles draw for the Herd. Brooke Lashway will compete in the qualifying draw Friday. Lashway will have to defeat two opponents Friday to qualify for the main draw.
The Herd will send two doubles pairs to the ITA Atlantic Regional. Silver and Stephanie Smith are paired together and will be seeded 12th at the regional. Anna Smith and Lashway are also paired for the tournament.
HERD AT THE 2016 REGIONAL
The Herd produced a successful regional in 2016, as Marshall had the runner-up in both the singles and doubles championship. Derya Turhan and Anna Pomyatinskaya made a run to the final in the doubles bracket and Turhan also reached the final of the singles bracket. Every member of the Herd won at least one match at the regional and Marshall had three singles players reach the round of 16. Two doubles teams also reached the round of 16.

Brooke Lashway/Anna Smith (MU) vs. Gabriela Rezende/Jovana Knezevic (Pitt); 3 p.m.
Singles (Qualifying Draw)
Brooke Lashway (MU) vs. Louie McLelland (ODU); 9 a.m.
Lashway will play Penn State’s Gabby O’Gorman or VCU’s Marina Alcaide at noon if she wins against McLelland.
The top 16 singles players and top 16 doubles teams in the region are seeded for the tournament.
