HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University women's tennis team will compete at the 2008 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Women's Regional Championship, Oct. 24-28, at the University of Pennsylvania Levy Pavilion in Philadelphia, Pa.

As the number four East Regional team, the Thundering Herd was allowed the maximum number of entries into the championships, which is six single players and three double teams.

"This is the first time we have been allowed to bring the maximum number of participants," Marshall's head coach John Mercer said. "This honor shows the respect our program and athletes have in the region."

The No. 42 ranked senior Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) will be the number one seed in the singles main draw. Senior Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) stands as the 17th seed in the singles main draw. Junior Deanna Bailey (McDonough, Ga.) and sophomore Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) will also compete in the singles main draw.

Junior Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) will be the number four seed, while senior Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) is the seventh seed in the singles qualifying draw.

The 14th-ranked senior tandem of Schmitt and Soor will compete against top-ranked opponents as the top seed in the doubles main draw.

The pair of Bailey and Keener will be the third seed in the doubles qualifying draw. The duo of Lock and Catherine Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.) will also participate in the doubles qualifying draw.

"We hope to continue the success the past players have had and hope the new players can get some breakthrough victories," Coach Mercer added.

During last season's championship competition, the then 59th-ranked Schmitt and Soor upset the then No. 1 ranked William and Mary pair of Megan Moulton-Levy and Katrina Zoricic in the doubles finals round to advance the Herd duo to the national indoor doubles championship.

The 2007 doubles victory was the second time a Herd pair has made it to the doubles finals at the East Regional Championship. However, it was the first time a Marshall's duo won in the doubles finals to advance to the national indoor doubles championship.

Also at the 2007 championships, Schmitt fell to then seventh-ranked Moulton-Levy in the singles semifinal round.

Friday competition will begin with the 32 draw qualifying rounds at 8 a.m. The rounds of 32 singles and 16 singles will be played and the 16 doubles round and quarterfinal round will follow.

Saturday matches are set to begin at 8 a.m. with the round of 64 and 32 doubles, and the rounds of 128 singles will be played following the opening rounds. All seeded players receive a bye and will not play a singles match Saturday.

Tournament play will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday with the round of 16 doubles. At 9 a.m., the round of 64 singles will begin and followed by the round of 32 singles.

Monday competition starts at 9 a.m. with the doubles quarterfinal round. Singles round of 16 will begin at 10 a.m., with the singles quarterfinals and semifinals of doubles to follow.

Doubles finals draw and singles semifinal draw will start at 9 a.m., Tuesday, with the singles final draw to follow.

The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the Nov. 6-9, 2008 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Virginia at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.
