HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -
The Marshall women's tennis team will travel to Columbus, Ohio to compete in the 2007 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by the Ohio State University at the Racquet Club of Columbus beginning Thursday, Nov. 1 and concluding Sunday, Nov. 4. Match play will begin Thursday, Nov. 1 at 11 a.m. with doubles.
The road to the Indoor Championship was a hard fought battle against the top nationally-ranked doubles opponents at the East Regional Championship last week.
"We are excited and looking forward to be playing in this championship tournament," Marshall head coach John Mercer said.
Marshall's No. 59 nationally-ranked junior's duo Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) stunned the number one nationally-ranked doubles pair, Megan Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic of William and Mary in the East Regional doubles finals championships back-on Tuesday, Oct. 23 to advance to the Indoor Championship.
It has been since 2003 when the Marshall's women's tennis doubles of Jessica Johnson and Ashley Kroh reached the doubles finals at the East Regional Championship and the national indoor championship. Johnson and Kroh advanced all the way to the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship consolation semifinals.
However, this is the first time in Marshall women's tennis history, a Marshall's duo won in the doubles East Regional finals to advance to the national indoor championship.
Schmitt and Soor will compete against the No. 10 nationally-ranked duo Caitlin Whoriskey and Zsofia Zubor of Tennessee in the doubles first round of play, Thursday.
