LEXINGTON, Ky.- The Marshall University track and field team resumed its indoor season on Friday with day one action at the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington.
Competing for the Thundering Herd in the first slate of events was junior transfer Crystal Walker, junior Amber Pierson, freshman Loren Dyer, and senior Brittany Stanley. The latter of these, Stanley, kicked the evening off with the weighted throw event, and despite placing 9 out of 12 competitors in the event’s final stage, managed to post a solid personal mark of 13.90m with her best throw.
The other three Marshall competitors each took part in the long jump event, finishing first, fourth, and seventh out of 12 competitors in the initial flight of the long jump. Newcomer Crystal Walker was the most impressive, winning the preliminary group with a jump of 5.83m that was .17m better than her next closest competitor. Amber Pierson finished fourth with a 5.45m jump, while freshman Loren Dyer posted a 5.25m leap to conclude the preliminary flight in seventh place.
The trio then advanced to the final stage, where Walker finished fourth with yet another 5.83m jump. Pierson and Dyer placed 11th and 15th respectively.
“We had a nice start today,” said Assistant Coach Willie Johnson. “Brittany Stanley had good personal performance in the weight throw, and Crystal Walker was fourth in the long jump with a very solid jump.”
Marshall will now await the next round of events, which is scheduled to begin with the high and triple jumps at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.
