Track and Field Breaks Two School Records Sunday to Conclude Indoor Season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Marshall track and field concluded the indoor portion of its 2017-18 season Sunday at the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The Herd finished the meet in eighth place out of 13 schools with 35 points. The Herd broke three school records during the two-day meet. Following Hasana Clark’s record in the weight throw on Saturday, Lauren Zaglifa in the pole vault and the 4x400 meter relay team followed up with records Sunday.

Freshman Lauren Zaglifa finished eighth in the pole vault with a best clearance of 3.60m (11 ft. 9.75 in.), breaking her own record set at the Thundering Herd Invitational.

The 4x400m relay team of Christianna Dogan, Safiyyah Mitchell, Brandy Elysee, and Danere’a White ran in 3:45.84, breaking the previous school record that stood since 2015. The team finished seventh in the event.

Sophomore Safiyyah Mitchell finished runner-up in the 60 meter hurdles finals for the second consecutive season with a time of 8.43. Mitchell became the first Herd athlete to make the All-Conference USA Indoor Team in consecutive seasons since Vanessa Jules in 2011 and 2012.



Freshman Taylor Robinson finished sixth in the event with a time of 8.90. The duo earned 11 combined points for Marshall in team standings.

Junior Melany Belot finished fourth in the triple jump with a best jump of 12.29m (40 ft. 4 in.), which gives her the fourth best mark in school history. Sophomore Denisha West finished eighth with a best jump of 12.00m (39 ft. 4.50 in.). The duo earned six points for Marshall in team standings.

Senior Barkley Castro finished seventh in the 800m finals with a time of 2:17.72, earning two points for Marshall.

Sophomore Ericka Budd finished 10th in the shot put with a best throw of 13.50 meters (44 feet, 3.50 inches).

“I’m disappointed in the final team score but not in the effort of our girls,” head coach Jeff Small said. “They fought their hearts out for every single point in every single event. I’m really looking forward to having a great outdoor season.”

200m: Brandy Elysee (DQ, Out of Lane)

3000m: Adriana Cook (19th-10:14.60), HollyAnn Swann (20th-10:14.78)

4x400m Relay: Team of Christianna Dogan, Safiyyah Mitchell, Brandy Elysee, Danere’a White (7th-3:45.84)



Pentathlon: Sarah Bever (6th-3578 points)

Long Jump: Lauren George (13th-5.41m/17 ft. 9 in.), Josie Raines (15th-5.39m/17 ft. 8.25 in.)

60m Hurdles Trial: Safiyyah Mitchell (8.66, qualified to finals), Taylor Robinson (8.82, qualified to finals), Hannah Carreon (10th-8.97)

60m Trial: Kayla Haywood (20th-7.73), Brandy Elysee (21st-7.74), Talor Wilkerson (29th-7.95), Naja Greer (30th-8.00)

400m Trial: Christianna Dogan (12th-57.03), Danere’a White (22nd-57.75), Breanna Hargrove (26th-58.66)

800m Trial: Barkley Castro (2:14.31, qualified to finals)
