Two Wins for @HerdTFXC at UNF Spring Break Invitational
Heiniger, 4x100m relay take wins
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—The Marshall University finished up a week of training in Florida by competing in the Sheraton University of North Florida Spring Break Invitational.
The Herd picked two victories, in the javelin throw and the 4x100 meter relay. Sophomore Heidi Heiniger won the javelin with a throw of 45.12 meters (148 feet). School record holder and graduate senior Alexis Montes finished second with a throw of 44.36m (145 ft. 6 in.).
It was a solid day for field events, with 13 total top-10 finishes in throwing and jumping events including the first and second place finishes by Heiniger and Montes.
Sophomore Elena Marchand finished third in two separate events; the discus and shot put. In the discus, she threw a mark of 46.05m (151 ft. 1 in.). In the shot put, she threw for 14.32m (46 ft. 11.75 in.).
Senior Antonique Butler finished third in the triple jump with a jump of 12.39m (40 ft. 7.75 in.).
In the hammer throw, sophomore Hasana Clark qualified for the finals and finished sixth with a toss of 53.23m (174 ft. 8 in.). Senior Mercedes Dowell finished 10th with a throw of 47.35m (155 ft. 4 in.). Clark also finished eighth in shot put with a mark of 13.44m (44 ft. 1.25 in.).
Including the winning 4x100m relay effort, there were 10 top-10 finishes for the Herd in running events.
In the 400m run, freshmen Christiana Dogan finished fourth with a time of 56.54. Junior Breanna Hargrove finished fifth with a time of 56.80.
In the 100m dash, senior Kametra Byrd finished fourth with a time of 12.09.
“Our kids really performed well from top to bottom,” head coach Jeff Small said. “I was really proud of them all. We had a great week of training which should provide a great springboard on to the rest of the season.”
The team will have a split squad next weekend. Some members who qualify will head back to Florida for the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla. Others will head to Athens, Ohio for the Cherry Blossom Invitational hosted by Ohio University on Saturday.
