School Records Fall at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - For the eighth time this season, Marshall's track and field team broke a different school record in the outdoor season as the 4x200 and 4x400 meter relay teams set new marks on Thursday and Friday at Penn Relays.

The record 4x200 meter time of 1:36.66 was set by Crystal Walker, Kearra Haynes, Shanice Johnson and Shyra Molton in the preliminaries of the college division. The time was nearly four seconds better than the previous school record of 1:40.16 set by Brittany Carey, Kearra Haynes, Delkira Maybin and Vanessa Jules last season.

The record 4x400 meter time of 3:43.48 by Amber Pierson, Haynes, Loren Dyer and Johnson placed 17th and was nearly two seconds better than the previous school record set last season by Dyer, Jules, Amber Pierson and Hadassah Lynch (3:45.21).

Other records set during this outdoor season were Vanessa Jules (high jump, 100 meter hurdles), Amanda Kennedy (javelin), Jasia Richardson (triple jump), Crystal Walker (long jump) and the 4x100 meter relay.



Marshall had four compete in the championship division of their events. Jules placed third in the high jump with a mark of 1.80 meters (5-10.75). Kennedy placed seventh in the javelin with a throw of 44.85 meters (147-1).

Along with the 4x200 meter relay, Walker also participated in her main event, the long jump and placed seventh with a jump of 5.99 meters (19-8). Richardson competed in the triple jump and placed eighth with a mark of 12.37 meters (40-7).

The Herd had two others compete in the long jump with Pierson and Elaine Derricott competing in the college division. Pierson placed 12th with a leap of 5.60 meters (18-4.5) and Derricott placed 15th with a jump of 5.51 meters (18-1).

Amanda Hottenstein placed 18th in the shot put at 12.84 meters (42-1.5). Bethany Drury threw a personal best 12.84 meters (42-1.5) which placed her 19th.

The 4x200 and 4x400 meter relays, both qualified for one of the three finals races on Saturday. However, the Herd will not compete on Saturday and instead come home to prepare for the Ohio Open, held May 4 in Athens, Ohio and more importantly the Conference USA Outdoor Championships May 8-11 in Houston, Texas.
