ATHENS, Ohio- The Marshall University track and field team made the short trip to Athens, Ohio, on Friday afternoon to participate in its final meet of the 2012 outdoor regular season at the Ohio Open.
Hosted by Ohio University at the Goldsberry Track, the meet welcomed a plethora of track and field competitors looking to get one last tune-up before the various conference championships begin next weekend. The Thundering Herd was represented by a sample of athletes that included first-place finishers Amanda Kennedy, Crystal Walker, Rachel Coaxum, and Amber Pierson, as well as runners-up in Leslie Thomas, Brittany Carey, and Alecia Daniels.
Kennedy used a javelin throw of 44.27m to finish first in that event, while Walker ran the 100m dash in 12.14 to claim first-place in a field of nine other runners. Rachel Coaxum then outperformed Marshall teammates Alecia Daniels and Elaine Derricott in the 100m hurdles with a first-place time of 14.44, before Amber Pierson turned-in one of the most impressive performances on the day with a first-place, 56.81 finish in the 400m dash to set a new personal record.
“We had some good performances,” said Marshall head coach Jeff Small after the meet. “We left some kids back home for finals and graduation, but the hay is in the barn and it’s time to see if all the kids’ hard work pays off next week in New Orleans.”
Marshall will make the flight down south this upcoming week, joining the rest of its Conference USA opponents in New Orleans for the C-USA Outdoor Championships from May 11-13.
