MU Sets Four School Records at C-USA Outdoor Championships

HOUSTON – The Marshall University women’s track and field team set four school records and had one individual first-place finish at the Conference USA Championship Meet this weekend hosted by Rice University.

The 4x100 and the 4x400 meter relay team broke previous MU outdoor records, along with Heather Saffel in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and Elaine Derricott in the heptathlon. Derricott won the heptathlon on Friday night and was the first-ever Marshall track and field student-athlete to be crowned an individual C-USA champion.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Brittany Carey, Vanessa Jules, Delkira Maybin and Moriah Njoku ran to a time of 46.60, breaking the previous record of 46.78 set back in 2006. MU placed seventh in the event.

Carey and Jules also doubled back to help the 4x400 meter relay team achieve a new program best. Along with Amber Pierson and Hadassah Lynch, MU ran to a time of 3:45.50 and won their heat. They placed eighth overall.



In her last race as a member of the Herd, Saffel was seven second clear of the previous record as she posted a time of 11:13.48 and also recorded a top-10 finish. Derricott crushed the school record with a point total of 5139.

Sunday action also saw Elizabeth Barnhart place sixth in the discus with a throw of 43.69m. The Herd finished 12th overall as a team.
