FINDLAY, Ohio-Marshall sophomore Shanice Johnson and junior Loren Dyer each set new school records as the Thundering Herd dominated the sprints Saturday at the Oiler Opener, hosted by the University of Findlay.
Johnson broke Vanessa Jules’ two-year old 300-meter record with a winning time of 40.63, which also became a new Malcolm Athletic Center mark. Junior Alanna Dawkins placed second in a time of 41.92.
Dyer’s winning time of 1:37.12 in the 600 meter event also set a new school mark, while freshman Tianya Hankerson placed third in a time of 1:38.80.
The Herd finished 1-2-3 in the 60 meters, with freshman Kametra Byrd taking the win in 7.80 seconds, followed by Dawkins (7.82) and freshman Hope Julmiste (7.84). Junior Moriah Njoku finished seventh in 8.09 seconds.
Senior Elaine Derricott won the 200 in 25.45 seconds, followed by Byrd’s third-place finish (25.88), freshman Catika Slay’s fourth-place showing (26.23), Njoku in seventh place (26.84) and sophomore Asia Bange in 11th (27.14).
Derricott (8.83) and Bange (8.84) also finished 1-2 in the 60 meter hurdles, while freshman Caitlyn Owings won the high jump with a 1.60 meter mark. Freshman Sierra Grose took ninth in that event with a 1.43 meter mark.
Slay won Long Jump with a leap of 5.41 meters, while freshman Antonique Butler
took third in the triple jump with a mark of 10.87 meters.
Sophomore Bethany Drury finished fifth in the shot put at 12.45 meters and ninth in the weight throw on Friday with a toss of 14.49 meters. In that event, freshman Mercedes Dowell took 25th with a mark of 10.93 meters.
Freshman Isabelle Rogner placed 10th in the pole vault at 2.65 meters.
The Herd will be back in action Friday, January 10 at the Buckeye Classic in Columbus, Ohio.
