Herd Track and Field Dominant in Season Opening Meet Victory Over Ohio
Clark, Elysee break school records
HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—The Marshall track and field team began its 2017-18 season in a dominating 82-28 dual meet victory over Ohio University Thursday night at the Jeff Small Track at the Chris Cline Indoor Athletic Complex.
Marshall athletes took first place in 10 of the 11 events held during the meet. In addition, two school records and five meet records were broken by Thundering Herd athletes.
Junior Hasana Clark broke her own school record in the weight throw, winning the event by throwing a best mark of 18.46 meters (60 feet, 6 inches). She set her previous record (18.42 meters/60 feet, 5.25 inches) during last season’s dual meet against the Bobcats.
Freshman Brandy Elysee in her first collegiate meet broke the school record in the 300 meter run with a winning time of 39.13 seconds. Her time surpassed the previous record time of 40.52 held in a three-way tie by Shanice Johnson and current teammates Safiyyah Mitchell and Danere’a White.

Head Coach Jeff Small on the meet
“It was really a great start by our kids, we came in first and second at least in all events but the shot put, it was fantastic. Two school records, first by Hasana Clark breaking her old record, and the other by Brandy Elysee, a freshman who just crushed the old record in the 300 meter. I’m very excited to see where the rest of the year will take us.”
Small on the month off before the next meet
“It’s a big challenge, but I really believe and feel like with this bunch they’re motivated. They can see, especially after today, how good they can be. They have a lot of want, to where they’re going to come back [after break] and be in great shape to where we can take off.”
The team returns to action following the semester break at the inaugural Marshall Women’s Classic at home on Saturday, January 13, 2018. The first event from the Jeff Small Track at the Chris Cline Indoor Athletic Complex is set for noon.
