CLEMSON, S.C.- The Thundering Herd track team will compete in the Tiger Invitational hosted by Clemson on Friday and Saturday. The Tiger Invitational marks the fifth meet for the Herd this season.
The meet kicks off on Friday evening at 5 p.m. with the distance medley relay and the shot put. In the distance medley relay Marian Brooks (Flat Top, W.Va.), Stephanie Eastman (Spencer, W.Va.), Xavier Richards (Kingston, Jamaica) and Terryn Webb (Beckley, W.Va.) will be running for the Herd.
Brooks ran for a new school record in the 5000m during the Akron Open on Feb. 4. Her time of 17:46 broke the previous record of 17:51 that was set in 1990 by Katrina Maynard. Besides the distance medley relay, Brooks will compete in the 3000m run at the Tiger Invitational.
While the distance medley is taking place, Rachel Blankenship (Hurricane, W.Va.) and LaTricia Jones (Spartanburg, S.C.) will be heaving the shot put for Marshall. The shot put is the only event for both Blankenship and Jones in the meet.
Other events on Friday evening include the 60m trials, the long jump, the 60m hurdle trials and the 5000m run. Breanna Jones (Columbia, S.C.), Carmissa Morris (Greenville, S.C.) and Katina Morris (Erie, Pa.) will participate in the 60m trials. Jones along with Danyell Garner (Logan, W.Va.) will be competing in the 60m hurdle trials, while Quinnyana Brown (Amherst, N.Y.) is the lone representative for Marshall in the long jump. The finals will be held on Saturday. The top eight finishers of the trials advance to the finals. Three Herd runners, Hannah Kovarick (Hurricane, W.Va.), Laura Lavery (Alliance, Ohio) and Sarah Sturgill (Hurricane, W.Va.), will be in running in the 5000m event.
The weight throw, high jump and triple jump will start Saturday's competition off. Stacie Belzer (Glassboro, N.J.), Britani Burke (Proctorville, Ohio) and Jessica Pissini (Hermitage, Pa.) are throwing for the Herd. Brown will jump in both the triple and long jumps, while Garner will only jump in the high jump.
Running in the various distance events are Stephanie Achilles (Deptford, N.J.), Anna Channey (Huntington, W.Va), Eastman, Lavery and Kovarik. The last event the Herd will participate in is the 3000m run that takes place at 2:40 p.m.
Following the conclusion of the Tiger Invitational the Herd has one remaining regular season meet before the Conference USA Championship on Feb 24-25.
